USD FB: Coyotes ranked No. 23 in FCS poll

VERMILLION, S.D.—The coaches poll made it official Monday morning that a top-25 matchup will take place inside the DakotaDome for the second consecutive season. The Coyotes, 2-0 after toppling Bowling Green 35-27 Saturday in Ohio, are No. 23 in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll. This week’s opponent, North Dakota (1-1), is up one spot to No. 10.

The No. 23 ranking is the highest awarded South Dakota since 2011 when the Coyotes climbed as high as No. 14. The final game of that 2011 season was No. 24 South Dakota at No. 22 North Dakota in Grand Forks. A season ago, No. 25 South Dakota hosted No. 15 Western Illinois.

Seven of the 10 Missouri Valley Football Conference programs are ranked in the top 25. This marks the 12th week in MVFC history that seven teams are nationally ranked, one shy of a record set in 2014.

South Dakota and North Dakota are meeting for the 96th time Saturday in a 2 p.m. kick in Vermillion. UND topped USD 47-44 in double overtime a year ago in Grand Forks. This is the first matchup between the two teams inside the DakotaDome since 2010, a 27-17 Coyote victory.
