    DSU Men's Basketball: Trojans win fifth straight game, earn 10th victory of the season

    VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held Valley City State (N.D.) to 38.6 percent overall shooting from the field Wednesday evening for a 73-61 victory, remaining perfect in the North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference play.  The Trojans had won five straight games and recorded their sixth win in the last seven games.

    Dakota State raised their overall record to 10-11 and stayed in a two-way tie in first place in the NSAA conference standings (3-0 NSAA record) with Jamestown (N.D.).  It was the seventh straight NSAA conference victory for the Trojans, dating back from last year's conference games.  Valley City State dropped to 10-12 overall record and winless in three NSAA conference game.

    It was the sixth straight season that Dakota State had recorded double digits victories for the first time since 1988-94.

    The Trojans and Vikings went through two ties and two lead changes in the first four minutes of the game.

    Leading 8-6, DSU used an 11-2 spurt to earn the first double-digit lead at 19-8 with 11:36 left in the first-half. (Brendon Boomsma drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give Trojans an 11-point lead.)

    Dakota State would expand to the largest lead of the first-half at 28-14 with 8:29 remaining before intermission.  The Vikings cut DSU's lead into single digit after a 10-2 scoring run, trimming Trojans' lead at 30-24 with 2:14 left in the first.

    DSU held a 34-26 halftime advantage.  The Trojans were 43.3 percent shooting in the first-half (13-of-30), with 5-of-11 coming from the 3-point line.  The Vikings were 11-of-28 from the field (39.3 percent) and 2-for-5 from the 3-point line.

    The Trojans started the second-half with an 11-2 scoring run to extend their lead to 45-28 with 14:08 remaining and never looked back.

    VCSU could get no closer than 10 points at 53-43 with 4:47 left as DSU cruised to a victory.  The Trojans had the biggest lead of the game on three different occasions – 61-43 with 3:31 left (after Taylor Zirbel's basket), 68-50 with 2:03 remaining (after Bryant Allen's field goal) and 71-53 with less than a minute to play (after Cameron Robinson's free-throw).

    Dakota State outscored Valley City State 39-35 in the second-half.  The Trojans shot 48.4 percent from the field (15-of-31) in the final twenty minutes of the game, while VCSU was held to 37.9 percent shooting (11-of-29).

    Adam Hofer led the Trojans with 19 points on his 6-of-10 shooting from the field.  He was perfect 3-of-3 from the 3-point arc and also made all four free-throws.  Robinson added 15 points (6-of-9 field goals).  Zirbel and Nathaniel Rauen each added eight points.  Derek Meger, Boomsma and Ian Barse each scored six points.  Allen had five points.

    Robinson pulled down eight rebounds for DSU.  Zirbel and Allen each had seven rebounds.  Barse recorded six rebounds.

    Boomsma, Robinson and Rauen each dished out two assists for Dakota State.  Robinson stole the ball three times.  Zirbel and Allen each had two steals.

    Mac Kroeplin scored 15 points off the bench for the Vikings.  He was 5-of-10 from the field, with all of his five field goals coming from the 3-point line.  Briton Bussman added 14 points.  Ellwood Ellenson had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.  He had two blocked shots.

    Riley West led VCSU with three assists. 

    Dakota State shot 28-of-61 overall from the field (45.9 percent) compared to Valley City State 22-of-57 field goals (38.6 percent).  The Vikings were 8-of-15 from the 3-point line (with 6-of-10 3-pointers coming in the second-half).  The Trojans were 6-of-14 from the 3-point arc.

    DSU was 11-of-21 free-throws (52.4 percent) compared to VCSU 9-of-12 free-throws (75 percent). 

    The Trojans had a slim rebounding edge over the Vikings 38-37.  DSU outscored VCSU 24-10 inside the paint.

    Dakota State returns home to begin their two-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse on Saturday.  The Trojans host Mayville State (N.D.) in the NSAA conference action.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
