    Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame Spotlight: Scott Benson (Inducted: 2008)

    Scott Benson was a 2008 inductee into the Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame. Benson is regarded as one of the top Track and Field athletes in the history of South Dakota. The former All American High Jumper had an outstanding career at Stevens High School in Rapid City, SD where he was ranked 2nd in the United States and 11th in the world (18 and under).

    Benson still holds the South Dakota State Boys High Jump record of 7'2" set in 1988 and was the first South Dakota high school athlete to jump 7'. Benson's South Dakota High School record, which has stood for 24 years, is the only high school record that exceeds the South Dakota College record in the same event. He went on to star at Iowa State University (ISU) in where he was a nationally ranked jumper and won two Big 8 Conference high jump championships. 

    In addition, Benson was a thee time Big 8 Conference Runner Up and won the 1992 Drake Relays and Florida Relays high jump crowns. Benson was part of five Big Championships as a member of the Iowa State University Men's Track team and was nominated as Team Captain in 1992 and 1993. Benson was a member of the 1991 Big 8 Champion Team which set a record for most points ever scored (169) at a Big 8 Conference Meet. That same team went on to place 4th at the 1991 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships. Benson ranks #3 all time at ISU in the high jump.
